If you are driving anywhere in the country, then now there is no need to keep a hard copy of the driving license. On Friday (10-08-2018), The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued advisory (rules) to eliminate the compulsions of keeping driving licenses and other vehicle papers in physical form.
Under this, we will be able to show licenses and other papers online to traffic police checking instead of keeping a hard copy of driving license, vehicle registration certificate or other documents. The Central Government has asked states to accept e-documents on the “DigiLocker” or “mParivahan” Mobile App Platform as valid under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and treat them at par with the certificates issued by the transport authorities, according to the ministry's statement. It also said that impounding of documents will be reflected electronically through 'eChallan' system.
These electronic records available on DigiLocker or mParivahan are deemed to be legally recognized at par with the original documents as per the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
Also these documents can be saved to and retrieved from the digital database. These apps (“DigiLocker” and “mParivahan”) can be downloaded from the Google Play Store. Transport Commissioner Dr. Shailendra Shrivastav said that almost all the activities related to RTO are happening in the online process and the facility to show driving licenses and other papers through mobile app have already provided. The rules of the central government will be followed more effectively.
