The UIDAI recently issued Virtual ID (VID) feature to ensure safety of the Aadhaar data. VID is a 16-digit temporary number. It can be used to complete KYC anywhere. It can be generated with the help of UIDAI website and "mAadhaar" mobile app. For Virtual ID, you have to enter your Aadhar number on the UIDAI website and followed by entering the OTP. Only one virtual ID can be generated in a day, with no expiry period. It means the generated virtual ID will not expire unless a new virtual ID is generated.

UIDAI is encouraging the use of VID and has now added a new feature of a "Masked Aadhaar". The masked aadhaar, if provided to the service provider, can be used instead of the Aadhaar number, thereby ensuring safety. Masked Aadhaar option allows you to mask your Aadhaar Number in eAadhaar.

The eAadhaar that has your masked Aadhaar number, the VID will also be printed just below the masked aadhaar. Download your masked Aadhaar from https://eaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and use it where Aadhaar number sharing is not required. This is a digitally signed valid eAadhaar which can be used as the regular eAadhaar.
