Indian Unique Identification Authority (UIDAI) has introduced an additional feature for verification. To identify the person's identity, the face authentication has been announced to start the facility in a phased manner. It is being started initially with the telecom service companies from September 15, 2018.
Earlier, the Authority had planned to implement this facility from July 1, 2018. It was later extended to August 1, 2018. The authority said that special instructions will be issued to authentication agencies to implement this face-to-face identifying feature. However, the Authority has not mentioned any time limit for this. UIDAI has also said that verification of photo taken from Live Face Photo Capture and its e-KYC will be necessary in those cases where the aadhaar is used to issue mobile SIM.
UIDAI says that the purpose of this step is to prevent fingerprint spoofing or cloning. According to a circular of UIDAI, it is mandatory for telecom service companies to match at least 10 per cent verification of live face with live photo from the September 15, 2018.
UIDAI CEO Ajay Bhushan says that according to the instructions of the Department of Telecommunications, if the SIM is issued without any aadhaar, this order will not be applicable. The Authority has proposed the use of Two Factor Authentication Process for Telecom Companies. Individuals who use the Virtual ID (VID) will be verified on the basis of fingerprint and iris. In the case, where verification of fingerprint and iris is not possible, face authentication can be used as an additional mode.
