The virtual ID system of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will start from today (July 1, 2018). If you do not want to give your Aadhaar card number to complete your KYC, then from today, you will be able to use this 16 digit number to give telecom companies and other service providers. This is the first stage of this tool that launches today, which aims to protect your privacy.

What is Virtual ID:

This virtual ID will be a 16-digit temporary number. It can be used to complete KYC anywhere. It can be generated with the help of UIDAI website and "mAadhaar" mobile app. For Virtual ID, you have to enter your Aadhar number on the UIDAI website and followed by entering the OTP. Only one virtual ID can be generated in a day, with no expiry period. it means the generated virtual ID will not expire unless a new virtual ID is generated. UIDAI has also announced a Facial Recognition with Virtual ID which will start from August this year.

How it will work:

Once the customer shares its virtual ID, the service provider will get a UID token instead of the Aadhar card number. Along with this, UIDAI has also ordered to provide least information to the service provider. At the time of authentication of Aadhaar number, you will not need to share the Aadhaar numbers rather you can now only give Virtial ID (VID). In this way the Aadhar authentication will be safer than ever.

How to Generate Virtual ID:

1. Go to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) website

2. Click ok “Virtual ID (VID) Generator”

3. Enter Aadhar Number

4. Enter Captcha Code

5. Click on “Send OTP”

6. OTP will be received on mobile number registered with Aadhar database.

7. Enter OTP

8. Click on “Generate VID” to receive VID number on your registered mobile number through SMS

9. Click on “Retrieve VID” to display VID number on screen.

Implementation period:

With the announcement of virtual ID, UIDAI has given time to those service providers who are not fully ready for this. Banks have time till August 31 to implement it because they have to deal with a large network.

Option of not sharing Aadhar number:

Ajay Bhushan Pandey, Chief Executive, UIDAI said that virtual ID is an important step for the protection and privacy of people's Aadhar numbers. After introduction of Virtual ID, now the people have option of not sharing their Aadhaar number and they will be able to generate a virtual ID instead.
